Mayor Macário Correia has
announced that Faro Town Hall is to launch a recruitment drive to hire
more night guards, as the city currently only has two.
”We have two night guards working
in downtown Faro, but the idea is to extend this to other areas, namely
S. Luís, the municipal market and the parish of Montenegro,” Macário
Correia told Lusa News Agency, adding that the increase in guards was
suggested by the “PSP, GNR and Faro Parish Councils.”
Wednesday’s
municipal meeting was due to include a discussion about Faro’s night
guards and their activities, which should enable the recruitment drive
to start “in the next few weeks,” said the Mayor.
“The
objective of increasing the number of night guards is to reinforce
security in Faro council and fight for a reduction in crime,” said
Macário Correia.
The meeting about the night
guards’ activities, a responsibility that was passed to Town Halls seven
years ago, will also enable new jobs to be created.
“Another
half dozen people could gain a job, and many who are currently
unemployed could gain an occupation,” said the Mayor, adding however
that “the job of a night guard is not just for anyone, they must be
selected and pass all of the aptitude tests.”
